Matthew Schaefer Joins Islanders Roster for NHL Debut
Matthew Schaefer, the Islanders? first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, has successfully secured a spot on New York's opening night roster for the 2025-26 season after an impressive training camp performance. This 18-year-old defenseman will make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. General Manager Mathieu Darche emphasized that Schaefer earned his position through hard work, dispelling any notion that he was given a free pass to the team.
Despite a setback in the previous season due to a collarbone injury, Schaefer showcased his potential by scoring seven goals and accumulating 22 points in just 17 games with Erie. Standing at 6-foot-2, he is known for his agility and puck-moving skills. With guidance from experienced players like Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock, Schaefer is expected to adapt to the fast-paced NHL environment. The organization believes he is ready to compete, although Coach Patrick Roy has indicated a cautious approach to his development. The Islanders will start the season with seven defensemen on their roster.
